Bio in brief

Maryam Mallakin is a researcher and designer focusing on health and medical domains. She holds a B.Sc. in Microbiology and a Master of Design in Design for Health and her primary field of research and design interest lies at the intersection of mental and physical health and intervention design of medical systems, products and processes, particularly in the context of critical care and the opioid crisis affecting youth. As an environmental design practitioner with a diverse portfolio of professional design and development, she provides consultation in the Greater Toronto Area primarily on projects that emphasize commercial and residential accommodations centred on design for health. Maryam is an accredited member of the Decorators & Designers Association of Canada (DDA).

Background: Maryam’s cross-disciplinary background in health sciences, design and the arts, ranges from academic degrees and professional practice in medical science, design for health and human-centred environmental design, to music pedagogy and performance. Her intimate knowledge of medical contexts, strategic research-based design practice, sustainable contemporary and classic environmental design, space and functionality is evident in her work.

Research: Maryam’s current field of research interest is centred on human-centred design within the health and medical sectors, including: collaboration in health researches and design of interventions that address public health issues, resilient designs in healthcare by leveraging various technologies, and sustainable environmental design practices applied to medical spaces for patients with diverse requirements.

Practice: As a professional practitioner in research-based environmental design, she brings unmatched degrees of judgment and acuity, analytical problem solving and functional perspectives to human-centred design. This is proven by her consistent track-record of success in improving quality of life through evidence-based, sustainable and functional design. She listens to her clients and conceptualizes their needs, requirements and imaginations, and with exclusive access to a broad supply network and construction expertise, she leads the implementations from design to finished construction. In 2012 Maryam Mallakin co-founded Bellavance Home Design in the Greater Toronto Area focusing on interior design service provision and strategic project management primarily in residential and commercial sectors. In 2017 she founded Harmony Environmental Design to exclusively pursue business proprietorship offering full-range strategic design and consultation, budgetary and operational planning, implementation and full-cycle project management within the health and medical, commercial, residential and non-profit sectors.

In tandem with her professional engagement as a researcher and designer, Maryam actively pursues her decades-long teaching practice of music performance and theory, focusing on children’s music advocacy and education.
